It’s in the Past

Usually books about revenge are dark and heavy. Right from the beginning I knew Julie Daines‘ book From Ash and Stone was going to be unique. 41QUfAaBxzL

Lady Margaret Grey of Hartfell wants for nothing. The daughter of a knight, she has a loving family, wealth, and even a secret romance with the blacksmith’s son. But all that is torn from her one fateful night when her home is attacked and her family killed. She is left with nothing but bitterness, an unwavering mistrust of men, and a strange and mysterious curse that allows her to feel the thoughts of anyone who touches her.

Now, after six years away, Margaret is returning home for one reason: revenge. She hopes that by avenging her family’s deaths, she will somehow be freed from her curse. But it won’t be easy. The identities of the raiders are still unknown, she has little left to her name, and traveling alone in the Northumbrian hills during the border wars is dangerous. Matters are further complicated by handsome Angus Robson, a Scotsman whose charm threatens to distract her from her plans. But the raiders are closer than she knows, and Margaret soon realizes that what she believed to be a curse may be the key to finding those she seeks. One touch will reveal the truth . . .

Not only was the story delightfully unexpected, it had humor and a quick pace that flowed well.

I loved the depths she gave to her characters. She gave them insight that many surface characters are lacking. Margaret saw how each choice led her to where she was and how it affected not only her, but others as well. It was more a story of changing the futures and pulling down internal walls, then it was about changing the past. I truly loved it. –M.V.

No More Reading Rut

Do you ever get in a reading rut? You enjoy what you’re reading, but you aren’t really connecting to any stories or characters on a deeper level? This book, totally broke my reading rut. 41AwUCn-65L

William Barlow’s life has been forever altered: his estranged father is dead, and William has inherited the title of Viscount Farleigh. Along with the title comes a neglected estate, an enormous amount of gambling debt, and one astounding acquisition that will turn William’s world upside down . . .

It is her first London Season, and Lady Louisa Hargreaves could not be more pleased. She has attracted the attention of the Earl of Kerridge, and the two are on the cusp of an official betrothal. That is, until she learns of a generations-old family debt: her grandfather gambled her hand in marriage and lost, and now Louisa must pay the price. She will marry not the earl but a man she just met, who has taken her freedom in one fell swoop. Even as she struggles to understand the handsome and aloof man she is to wed, Louisa is irresistibly drawn to him—and he to her.

But she soon realizes he is harboring secrets, and as her wedding day approaches, she must discover what her future husband is hiding before she makes the gravest mistake of her life.

Karen Tuft‘s characters were not only delightful, but had depth. William’s moral goodness and his motives to help the people under his care contrasted well with his decision to enforce the debt. Louisa’s decision to honor the debt coming from a place of duty gave a well written contrast to her desire to be loved. I especially loved Louisa’s brothers, they added such a fun layer to the overall story line.

The author wrote with such emotions that you’re drawn into their world. The scenes were wonderfully written. The story is sweet and you just want to nestle into their world and stay till the very end. Which she handled beautifully. It was a skillfully written happily ever after ending. –M.V.

Grandmother what big eyes you have

Out of all of the fairy tales out there, Little Red Ridding Hood has never been a favorite of mine. I mean, who doesn’t recognize their own Grandma? Not only the eyes, ears, and teeth, but let’s talk about the fury face, I mean come on. I started this book not even realizing it was a modern day telling of, Red Riding Hood; it didn’t take me long thanks to the names. I was enjoying the writing by Lauren Winder Farnsworth in her book, Chasing Red, so I stuck it out. I’m glad I did.

51dYo0TAHwL._SX331_BO1,204,203,200_

“Ryder Redmond can’t wait to begin her new life in New York City, with her first real job after college. But the big city gets a little more complicated once she meets the charming and mysterious Damian Wolfe. On the surface he seems perfect, but her friend Hunter is suspicious of his all-too-straight smile and his motives towards Ryder. With her heart on the line, Ryder will have to decide just how much she trusts the handsome city slicker.”

I loved how Lauren stayed true to Red Riding hoods innocence, and naivety. Even though that is what drives me nuts about Red, I am glad she stayed true to that. I often wanted to shake the main character for it, but it was fitting for following the fairy tale.

There was only one part about the book that I really didn’t like. The childhood best friend who actually seems to like Damien is the one who helps end the relationship in the end, but only by confessing something she saw months earlier. It seemed odd that she sat on that information because she assumed the relationship wouldn’t last, the whole thing seemed a little out of character.

I enjoyed watching her relationships with the other characters develop and grow. Especially between her and her mother. I love finding new authors and will definitely read another one from this author. –M.V.

Sweet Small Town

I’ve read all of Kimberly Krey’s Sweet Montana Brides collection, but hadn’t read any of her Cobble Creek Romances. The Sheriff’s Bride was a sweet small town romance.

“Trent Lockheart might be the new sheriff in town, but he can’t stop Jessie Jean from stealing his heart.

Sheriff Trent Lockheart knew he’d be in for a challenge when he moved from the big city and a large police force to the small Wyoming town of Cobble Creek. But at least he’d be able to stick to his bachelor ways without temptation. So he thought. Cobble Creek isn’t overflowing with young, single ladies, but Jessie Jean—the gorgeous brunette who runs the Country Quilt Inn—proves more tempting than any woman he’s known.

Jessie doesn’t care much for the new sheriff in town. After an explosive first meeting that almost ends in Jessie’s arrest, she’s even more determined to plan on dinner for one for the rest of her life. Sure, the new sheriff is seriously attractive, and after a second, much less dangerous run-in, he might not be that bad, but Jessie has no plan to marry, date, or even let a man into her life. Still, as the days pass, Trent’s surprising charm works past Jessie’s determination, and she finds promise in their budding relationship.

After opening up about the difficulties in her past, Jessie finds that Trent is guarding a dark tragedy of his own, one that might threaten their chance at a future together.”

Kimberly Krey having her characters realize they had to be “willing to work at things to get what you want” showed a true understanding of romance. The fact that they had to fight to overcome their backgrounds and fight for each other made their relationship more real and relateable.

My one struggle was that Jessie’s realization of wanting to fight for Trent seemed to be a turning point, but then she gave up too quickly.  I think it would’ve fit more with the moment and her personality for her to demand he talk and not leave until he acquiesced. Other than that it was a sweet quick read.

If You Build It…

I have a confession: my dad is the coolest. And I’m not just saying that cause he’s my dad. In High School he was the pitcher for his High School baseball team and instead of playing college ball, he decided to serve a two year mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and that changed everything for him and shifted his dreams. Baseball was still a pretty big deal in our house and movies like Field of Dreams and The Natural were staples, which probably explains why I have a soft spot for baseball stories; especially when it come to ones where the hero is a pitcher.

“Julie’s calm life is thrown a curve ball when her brother arrives the night before his seven-month deployment asking her to take care of his son. As a preschool teacher, she’s used to dealing with toddlers, not nine-year-olds. Noting her nephew’s interest in baseball, Julie signs him up for little league. She’s anything but thrilled to find out that his coach is a celebrity.

Eric returned to St Marys to lick his wounds and start over. But even in his hometown, he’s known more for his unfortunate appearance on a reality dating show than for his seven years in the major leagues. All he has to show for that poor decision is an ex-wife and a broken heart.

Julie’s obvious disapproval makes her the perfect choice for his team mom. If she doesn’t like him, she won’t cause any problems. But will that be enough to keep his growing interest in her in check? And as Julie’s preconceived notions about sports figures slowly unravel, will she be able to resist the man behind the public persona?”

This story was a little cheesy with a few parts that seemed less natural and more contrived, but I appreciated the lack of angst and the sweet way the romance built. Pretty cute, and very clean. –N.C.

Author Delaney Cameron

I’m a Georgia girl at heart if not by birth. I love to read, watch college football, and spend time with my husband. I’m a hopeless romantic so there will always be a happily ever after in my stories. I also like to write about second chances because love doesn’t always work out the first time.

My books are sweet romances set in both contemporary and regency settings featuring stories about the journey to love, from that first meeting to the point where two people know their hearts are no longer their own. My characters aren’t perfect. They make mistakes and have faults like the rest of us. They learn the sometimes painful truth that the path to love isn’t always smooth, but it’s a road worth traveling.
