Unfinished

Confession: I don’t always leave a book unfinished, but when I do it’s for good reason. Unfortunately Uglies by Scott Westerfeld was one of these instances. Which is surprising because I’m the dystopian loving sister.

“Tally is about to turn sixteen, and she can’t wait. In just a few weeks she’ll have the operation that will turn her from a repellent ugly into a stunning pretty. And as a pretty, she’ll be catapulted into a high-tech paradise where her only job is to have fun.

But Tally’s new friend Shay isn’t sure she wants to become a pretty. When Shay runs away, Tally learns about a whole new side of the pretty world– and it isn’t very pretty. The authorities offer Tally a choice: find her friend and turn her in, or never turn pretty at all. Tally’s choice will change her world forever…”

While the plot seemed like an intriguing concept, the story as a whole lacked a spark to keep my interest.  I’ve enjoyed books with a predictable plot and I’ve found books with two dimensional characters entertaining, but the combination was hard to get past. Throw in conversations that were forced and relationships that were shallow and I just couldn’t do it.

I can only rate it up to page 432, so if the language turns or romance heats up after that I’d be surprised… for the first time when it comes to this book.  -AB
