Surprise Me

I love being surprised; just as long as I don’t know there is a surprise coming. I’m a pretty impatient person so if I have to wait to find out what the surprise is it makes me crazy. But if it’s sprung on me then I love it. I also love surprising people. We live out of state from my family and where I grew up, and I thinks it’s fun to just show up and surprise people with a visit (obviously letting one person know we were coming so they are a little prepared for us.) I love watching peoples faces light up with happiness, shock, and joy.

I also love being surprised in books. I love when I’m reading along and think I know what is going on and then bam! Everything I just read was not what I was thinking. The Kiss of Deception, by Mary Pearson was this way for me. I had to stop and go back and re-read the first part because I was so thrown. I feel like I’m pretty good at figuring things out, so when a book throws me I love it.

In a society steeped in tradition, Princess Lia’s life follows a preordained course. As First Daughter, she is expected to have the revered gift of sight—but she doesn’t—and she knows her parents are perpetrating a sham when they arrange her marriage to secure an alliance with a neighboring kingdom—to a prince she has never met.
On the morning of her wedding, Lia flees to a distant village. She settles into a new life, hopeful when two mysterious and handsome strangers arrive—and unaware that one is the jilted prince and the other an assassin sent to kill her. Deception abounds, and Lia finds herself on the brink of unlocking perilous secrets—even as she finds herself falling in love.
The Kiss of Deception is the first book in Mary E. Pearson’s Remnant Chronicles.

This book was so much fun. I love how Mary Pearson threw me off balance a little bit. I liked the Adventure in the story as well as not knowing which of the two handsome strangers was the prince and which was the assasin. The book does leave you with a cliffhanger, but the series is complete so you don’t have to wait to read the whole series.  –M.V

PS- While getting ready to post this I found out she has a new book that will be part of the Remnant Universe, Dance of Thieves comes out August of this year! There isn’t any more info other than that, but the title has me thinking I might know who it could be about.

  1. Hey sis – I loved this book too! I thought it was incredible creative writing that she would give us perspective from all three characters, but leave you hanging as to who was the prince and who was the assassin, masterfully done. I didn’t like the second book as much, but it was still good. I’ve had a really hard time getting into the third book in the series though and haven’t finished it yet, but you have inspired me to try again remembering how much I loved the first book. –N.C.
